Knee Arthroscopy Surgery Procedure

Here’s a brief overview of the knee arthroscopy procedure:

  • Anesthesia: The patient is administered general, regional, or local anesthesia for a painless procedure, depending on your specific case and health.
  • Incisions: Small incisions are made around the knee to allow the insertion of the arthroscope and other surgical instruments.
  • Arthroscope Insertion: An arthroscope, a thin tube with a camera and light, is inserted via one of the incisions, giving the doctors a clear view of the internal knee. It helps them diagnose the problem more effectively.
  • Surgical Intervention: Then the surgeon can insert other required surgical instruments through the other incisions to remove or repair damaged tissue, such as damaged cartilage, torn meniscus, or inflamed synovial tissue, as required after the diagnosis.
  • Closure: Finally, the incisions are closed with a stitch or sterile strips, and the knee is wrapped with a soft bandage. Braces may be used for repair and reconstruction procedures.

Knee Arthroscopy Surgery Procedure

Overall, knee arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that allows for both diagnosis and treatment of various knee conditions, with the goal of relieving pain, improving function, and restoring mobility in the knee joint.

Recovery and Outlook

You may expect the following after a knee arthroscopy:

  • Pain Management: Pain and discomfort are normal after a knee arthroscopy. However, it can be managed with prescribed medications.
  • Rest and Elevation: During the early weeks of recovery, rest and elevation help reduce swelling and promote healing.
  • Ice Therapy: Applying ice packs to the area several times during the day for about 15 to 20 minutes will help reduce swelling and inflammation. Make sure to avoid direct contact between the ice pack and your skin. You can wrap it with a cloth or a towel.
  • Compression: Some patients may benefit from wearing a compression bandage or sleeve around the knee to help reduce swelling and provide support during the early stages of recovery.
  • Physical Therapy: Physical therapy exercises play a crucial role in rehabilitation following knee arthroscopy.
  • Return to Normal Activities: You will be able to return to your normal activities gradually by following your surgeon’s instructions.

Make sure that you attend the follow-up appointments scheduled by your surgeon in order to monitor your progress. Recovery from a knee arthroscopy is generally faster when compared to an open or traditional surgery.
