A frenotomy, or a tongue-tie release, is a surgical procedure designed to free the tongue in those who suffer from ankyloglossia. In this condition, the range of motion of the tongue range is restricted due to an unusually short, tight lingual frenulum (a strip of tissue that connects the tongue to the floor of the mouth). Tongue tie may not result in immediate problems, however, as a child grows, it can affect speech, eating, and swallowing patterns. It may also lead to defects in the development of the oral structures. The procedure consists of cutting the frenulum and freeing up the movement. Read on to know more.
